Support Relief Efforts for Haiti

Earthquake in Haiti
A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on January 12, causing major casualties and damage. The quake was followed by several aftershocks with magnitudes over 5.0.
Many nations are already coming to the aid of Haiti, with humanitarian efforts underway to assist the Haitian people with food, water, temporary shelter, medical services, and more. However, as with any major disaster, governments are not able to provide 100 percent of what is needed. In a statement issued today by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Secretary Janet Napolitano described U.S. assistance en route to Haiti, also stating, "I encourage the American people to donate what funds they can afford to disaster relief organizations such as the American Red Cross to allow these voluntary groups to provide goods and services to disaster survivors as quickly as possible."
Donate to the relief fund
The best way our community can help the victims of the Haiti Earthquake is to make a financial donation to the American Red Cross
• Online at www.redcross.org
• By calling 1-800-REDCROSS
• By mail 202 W. Rialto Ave. San Bernardino, CA 92408
• By texting the word Haiti to 90999 and a $10 donation will be added to the donors monthly cell phone bill.
Get Trained for Earthquakes and Disasters
This recent earthquake illustrates the importance of being prepared for earthquakes and all types of disasters. The Newport Beach Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, Program is designed to prepare citizens in the event of a catastrophic disaster. This unique program is offered to all Newport Beach residents free-of-charge. If you are interested in the CERT program, call 949-644-3112 or click here.

Second Annual State of CERT
Mark Your Calendar

The second annual State of CERT event is scheduled for Friday, January 22, 2010, the invitation is attached.  Invitations will be mailed to all Newport Beach CERT volunteers (and RACES) on Monday, January 4, 2010.  Attached is also a letter that I drafted to send to Newport Beach businesses that will get sent out this week.  The State of CERT will serve as the annual fundraiser for the CERT program.  Please review the attached invitation and letter and forward to any business or group that you think would be interested in donating to the Newport Beach CERT program.  At the event this year, I am hoping to have “opportunity drawings” of the donated items.  As is always the case, cash donations in the form of a check are always appreciated.  If you know of any business or community group that would be interested in donating to the CERT program please forward this letter onto them.  We are looking for “event sponsors” to sponsor a table or the entire event as well.  The event is primarily for the CERT volunteers but if businesses (or sponsors) would like to attend they are welcome.  All donors and sponsors will be recognized for their donation in the event guide.  If you have any additional ideas on how to raise funds for this event, I am always open to suggestions.  I really appreciate all your help and am looking forward to a great event.  Let me know what you all think.

Thanks, Matt Brisbois

Great job!
